Dear Joshua Kane,
This blog is our Valentine for you, sent with love and the promise of Chocolate Storybook candies when you come home. In Shanghai today, you're celebrating a different holiday – Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival. So, little Joshua, Happy Valentine's Day and Happy New Year all wrapped up in one. We're having Belgian waffles for breakfast this morning – your dad loves to treat us to his big breakfasts – and there's a place at our table just for you!
As soon as your nannies return from holiday and stores return to normal hours, you will receive a special New Year's delivery from us – an outfit just your size, a stuffed animal, and a soft photo album with six photos of us, your forever family. We've written you a letter, too, that someone will translate into Chinese and read to you. Are you able to hear when you wear your hearing aids? Or, do your nannies speak to you with sign language? Well, whether your caregivers speak with their voices or hands, and whether you hear with your ears or your heart; we are praying that our message of love reaches you across many winds and waves and time zones.
Here is our letter to you:
Dear Joshua Kane,
Every night before we go to bed, we say a prayer for the day that is beginning for you. Every morning when we wake up, we say a prayer for your night of sleep. We think of you all the time, and we imagine what it will be like to have you home with us, your forever family. We cannot wait to meet you and give you big hugs. There is an empty chair at our table during every meal – it's your chair. There is an empty seat in the van we drive – it's your seat. We have a room all ready for you to share with your brother Jacob, and we have closets full of toys. Most of all, we have hearts full of love to give.
Your oldest brother Andrew loves you and can't wait to see you. He has tons of Legos he really wants to show you. He just made a model of a Mars rover for his science class. This summer, he wants to explore our neighborhood pond with you.
Your sister Anna wonders what it is like in China where you have been growing up. She likes drawing, writing, and reading. She is excited because we have a children's book coming out in stores next week. She hopes you like books. She can`t wait to see you. She loves you very much.
Your brother Jacob is less than two years older than you. He wants to share fruit snacks and fun. The two of you will share a bedroom and be good playmates. He says he loves you forever!
Your father and I cannot wait for you to join our family. We will love holding you on our laps and reading you stories. We are making plans for lots of family game nights, bicycle rides, trips to the park and the zoo. We are excited to learn all about you – your favorite foods, toys and activities.
We will come to bring you home as soon as we can.
All our love,
Your forever family – Mama, Daddy, Andrew, Anna, and Jacob
